The Vision Behind the Vine
The 2023 Dr. Konstantin Frank Grüner Veltliner from the Finger Lakes is an elegant white that is a testament to the legacy of Dr. Konstantin Frank, whose pioneering work forever transformed winemaking in the Finger Lakes and beyond.
Dr. Frank’s story began in 1951 when he arrived in the United States armed with a Ph.D. in viticulture and a vision to grow European grape varieties in upstate New York’s harsh, cold climate. At the time, only table grapes and locally developed hybrids were grown dude to the climate, neither of which make fine wine. Against prevailing beliefs, Dr. Frank proved that Vitis Vinifera vines could thrive in the region, sparking the “Vinifera Revolution” and elevating the Finger Lakes to a world-class wine destination. Today, four generations later, his great-granddaughter Meaghan Frank continues this legacy, blending tradition with innovation to produce wines that honor the family’s rich heritage.
The 2023 Grüner Veltliner, first planted by 3rd generation Fred Frank in 2007, is a stellar example of this commitment to excellence. Inspired by his studies at Germany’s prestigious Geisenheim Institute, Fred introduced Grüner Veltliner to the Finger Lakes, where it flourished in the region’s cool climate. This vintage bursts with cool scents of guava, rosewater, and candied lime–its sleek, vivid character is balanced, maintaining focus and precision with every sip.
As one of the most respected names in New York wine, Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery continues to receive accolades for its dedication to quality and innovation. With a reputation for excellence that spans generations, the winery remains a cornerstone of the Finger Lakes wine community. I know that my time spent in college in this area was greatly enhanced by both Dr. Franks excellent wines and visits to the winery and vineyards. I hope you enjoy this wine as much as I did, as a refreshing and memorable journey through the flavors of the Finger Lakes.
92 Points, Decanter
Dr. Konstantin Frank Winery’s 2023 Grüner Veltliner grows on the producer's Seneca Lake property. It is located in the Finger Lakes Banana Belt region, where temperatures average several degrees warmer, and fruit has the ability to ripen further. Indulgent herbal and floral aromatics come to the forefront with ripe notes of apricot, white peach, and lime. Mineral-driven and well-balanced with a strong backbone of acid.
